I rarely watch the news anymore because I always know that within a few days someone will make it more interesting by applying autotune effects to it. Case and point:

What if money was no object?

Transcript:

What do you desire? What makes you itch? What sort of a situaion would you like?

Let's suppose -- I do this often in vocational guidence of students. They come to me and say, "Well, uh, we're getting out of college, and we haven't the faintest idea of what we want to do."

So I always ask the question, "What would you like to do if money were no object? How would you really enjoy spending your life?"

Well, it's so amazing. As a result of our kind of educational system, crowds of students say, "Well, we'd like to be painters, we'd like to be poets, we'd like to be writers. But as everybody knows you can't earn any money that way."

Or another person says, "I'd like to live an out-of-doors life and ride horses."

I said, "Do you want to teach at a riding school? Let's go through with it. What do you want to do?"

When we finally got down to something which the individual says he really wants to do. I will say to him, "you do that, and forget the money. Because if you say that getting the money is the most important thing, you will spend your life completely wasting your time. You will be doing things you don't like doing in order to go on living that is to go on doing things you don't like doing. Which is STUPID! Better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing than a long life spent in a miserable way."

And after all, if you do really like what your'e doing, it doesn't matter what it is, you can eventually become a master of it. It's the only way to become a master of something, to be really with it. And then you'll be able to get a good fee for whatever it is. So don't worry too much. Somebody's interested in everything. And anything you can be interested in, you'll find others who are.

But it's absolutely stupid to spend your time doing things you don't like in order to go on doing things you don't like and to teach your children to follow in the same track. See, what we're doing is we're bringing up children, and educating them to live the same sort of lives we're living in order that they may justify themselves and find satisfaction in life by bringing up their children to bring up their children to do the same thing. It's all wretch and no vomit. It never gets there!

And so therefore it's so important to consider this question. "What do I desire?"

possibly the most exciting video ever! #zombies

All of you doubters can suck on this video! So, now ask yourself how important it will be in the future to remain friends with me. Unlike you, I have been thoroughly preparing for the zombie apocalypse since I was a wee little laddy.

See if this vid doesn't freak you out a bit.

Okay, not exactly but this is still pretty cool for all of us foot doctors.

These are shoe-forms kept by the designer Salvatore Ferragamo of some of the most famous stars of the good ol' days. Pretty cool if you ask me.

Anatomical paper art

I came across this stellar art series when I was surfing streetanatomy.com and couldn't help but re-post it. There is about anatomical art that gets my geek flag waving! The human body is incredibly beautiful and I love it when someone captures it well in a work of art. Some people think it's creepy but I've been called worse... by my own kids.

The artist is Lisa Nilsson and you can see some of her work at the Boston University Art Gallery show "Teaching the Body". Believe it or not, these pieces are made from a bunch of tiny rolled up bits of paper.

Girl got moves

It surely surprises no one that there are plenty of girls who could pack a whooping on my arse. This is another little princess who would be celebrating a KO on me should she desire to pummel my face. It scares me that my daughter might beat me up like this one day. And honestly, I am half tempted to try and train her to do it.

Book Review: Useless Landscapes, or A Guide for Boys: Poems by D.A. Powell

Useless Landscape, or A Guide for Boys: PoemsUseless Landscape, or A Guide for Boys: Poems by D.A. Powell
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

There is no doubt that D.A. Powell is a gifted poet. His verses are lyrical and beautiful and he creates vivid depictions of California landscapes in the early poems of this collection. At first I found myself in love with this collection until further in it because looser and more juvenile. Fantastic imagery was replaced by crude depictions of casual same-sex debauchery.

While it is undeniable that Powell has a way with words and can make any situation musical and witty, I personally didn't find the subject matter of several of the poems endearing or relatable. While other reviewers have called these poems 'homosexual love poems', they weren't even that. They were depictions of random vulgar sexual experiences. While I agree that these topics may have merit for poetry in the eyes of many people, I found myself uninterested and unimpressed during these specific poems which was unfortunate because the other stuff in this collection was quite good.

Overall this collection felt like a weird disjointed mix of a homosexual campfire poems and another side of beautifully scripted poetic landscapes. Not sure I can recommend this book overall to many people besides my LGBT friends but I may perhaps check out another selection by Powell.

To Wander The LabyrinthTo Wander The Labyrinth by Brian Peters
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

To Wander the Labyrinth in a very easy, succinct read. I received it in a Goodreads giveaway and was please to find a signed copy and nice thank-you note from the author. In the grand scheme of things, the book was an entertaining but underwhelming read.

I liked the overall tone of the story and the plot was intense and full of intrigue but there were some key elements lacking that could have made this into a very fascinating read. The writing style had a very staccato rhythm to it and had very little depth - only giving the necessary information rather than developing the characters, plot and setting. This was disappointing because I think if more time was taken to complete these details, I would have enjoyed the book quite a bit.
