My Midlife Crisis: Watches

The other day I asked my wife when I was allowed to have a midlife crisis... because I have big plans. I mean BIG plans! I'm a man with expensive tastes and a lot of interests. Unfortunately she told me that I have to wait a few years. Until the school debt is paid. Until the credit card debt is paid. Until we know we can afford for the kids to go to college. I tried to explain that college is over-rated anyways but I just got decimated with a burning look of death that my dear wife has come to perfect.

Well, after some hearty discussion, I was able to convince my wife that a midlife crisis would eventually fall upon us. To my dismay our negotiations took us some 10-12 years in the future and with a far less appealing budget than my whims would have taken me. But, since a boy has to dream, here are the watches that made it on my pipe-dream list for my midlife crisis (P.S. none of these watches fit into our negotiated budget):

A.Lange & Sohne Zeitwerk

A.Lange & Sohne Richard Lange Tourbillon "Pour le Merite"

Montblanc Tourbillon Cylindrique Nightsky Geospheres

Roger Dubuis Excalibur 42 Automatic Skeleton

Arnold & Son Nebula

Zenith El Primero Chronomaster

The pen is mightier...

To add to my list of geeky interests, lately I have found myself drawn to the Honjo Masamune of writing instruments - the fountain pen. Whenever I bring up my interest in fountain pens to anyone, I get pretty much the same response: "Seriously? Dude, you must be gay. A pen is a freaking pen. Here, I'll lend you my Bic."

I don't want your Bic. I want a glorious and powerful weapon for conquering the written word. I want my pen to be as mighty as the sword.... like it has been said. Okay, I admit that that sounds a little over-the-top. Perhaps a tad bit sentimental for an inanimate object.... But I like that sentimentality.

Everything we do nowadays is disposable or chopped into tiny fragments on a computer keyboard. I was want write stuff worth keeping.... with a pen. And don't tell me that the pen doesn't matter - that it's just the words. That's not wholly untrue but I want my words to appear as nice as they sound. Watch this video and see what I mean:

Now of course it isn't realistic to spend 2 minutes typing every letter you write but I want to take back some of the art in my writing that was stolen by computers. I want to learn how to make things beautiful on paper. Now, you may be wondering what exactly I intend to write with these mind-blowing fountain pens. That's a dang good question. I'm not quite sure. I enjoy writing in a journal occasionally and I also throw out some rhymes every once and a while... and by rhymes I mean the kind that Robert Frost threw down, not Slim Shady. Of course, I'm not Robert Frost and I may never create anything worth much to anyone... but I still want something that one day my children or grandchildren can pick up and hold in their hands and say, "You know what, Grandpa was a weird duck but he sure was passionate about something." That's good enough for me.

So, hence the fountain pens. Of course, I don't really have a nice one yet. I have some really cheap Pilot Varsity pens (which are actually more of a pleasure to write with than I expected) and I have a Lamy Safari waiting at home in CLE for me to try out when I finally get home. But, I WANT to own a nice pen. I have to admit that I have spent hours on Youtube watching videos by InkNouveau and sbrebrown and a bunch of others lusting after pens and inks and notebooks. Perhaps a graduation gift to myself will justify the cost of a nice pen next year.

My wish list is overflowing with pens right now but here are some of the ones that are on my 'yes please' list right now:

Waterman Carene - this is at the very top of my list. This is my lust pen. I've already named her in my dreams.

Namiki Falcon - this baby seems glorious and has a semi-flexible nib which makes it nice for doing some calligraphy work as well.

Sheaffer Valor - just an absolutely beautiful pen with an inlaid nib.

Yard-o-Led Viceroy Grand Victorian - this pen itself is a work of art... but is also a pipe-dream.

Pilot Custom 74 - a little more practical, everyday type of pen.

There are few things as awesomely nerdy as cosplay... although my thoughts of Lollipop Chainsaw have made me forget what those things are.

possibly the most exciting video ever! #zombies

All of you doubters can suck on this video! So, now ask yourself how important it will be in the future to remain friends with me. Unlike you, I have been thoroughly preparing for the zombie apocalypse since I was a wee little laddy.

See if this vid doesn't freak you out a bit.

It surely surprises no one that there are plenty of girls who could pack a whooping on my arse. This is another little princess who would be celebrating a KO on me should she desire to pummel my face. It scares me that my daughter might beat me up like this one day. And honestly, I am half tempted to try and train her to do it.

Ever want to eat your dessert on plate that looks like a testicle? Well, you're in luck! Medical illustrator Emily Evans designed these plates to look like histological samples of different body tissues. Enjoy your flan on testicle, liver, thyroid and esophagus.

Don't mind if I do! Get em here.

I wonder if I could pull something like this off on my CV and get away with it. What do you think? Awesome or cheesy?

Book Review: Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo

Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai UndercityBehind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity by Katherine Boo
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

As I gobbled up this book I felt so very conflicted. I was stuck between a perverse fascination with the misery that is so commonplace in the lives of the characters in this story while also ashamed and guilt-ridden for being able to read this book on a Kindle while I lay on a down pillow. It is hard to believe that this story could be true - however, it is, and it is a painfully delicious tale of poverty and suffering.

From page one I was captivated by the lives and struggles of the people living in the Annawadi slums of Mumbai, India. Looking from the outside it is nearly incomprehensible that people can live this way while many of us sit in spacious homes in front of big screen televisions and complain about our lack of luxury. But beyond the political statement that is contained inside this well-crafted tale, a message of hope and change is there - subtle, but it's there.

While most of this book is fairly heart-rending, there is no doubt that Katherine Boo is a wonderful author. She transformed a terrible collection of tragedies into a work of art. This is a fantastic book that is very worthy of the praise it has received.

Must Read: Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter

Beautiful RuinsBeautiful Ruins by Jess Walter
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

After reading review after review that spouted praise for Beautiful Ruins, I decided to find out for myself what the excitement is all about. Surely the dust jacket of this book didn't do justice to this story if so many people fell in love, yet I failed to stay interested enough in the synopsis to read its brief summary.

Only pages into Beautiful Ruins, I think I discovered the the reason my nights began to draw themselves out long after what is healthy for a human being to read. This book isn't incredible just because it's an incredible story. It's fantastic because it was written by Jess Walters. I don't think I have ever read a book that is so beautifully crafted and a story that is so perfectly executed as this one.

What makes reviewing this book frustrating is that it is hard to explain the story to someone without watching their eyes glaze over and drift off. While the story itself is also beautiful and romantic and fascinating, it truly took someone of greater talent than I to do it justice.

Those who are interested in reading this book will have to do as I did and have faith in the reviews of people like me who can't quite explain why this is such a wonderful novel. Just read it.

Must Read: Defending Jacob by William Landay

Defending JacobDefending Jacob by William Landay
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have to start out by saying that Defending Jacob is in a genre that I generally dread reading. Crime fiction / legal thrillers is one of those spaces that I just steer clear of. I hate the repetitive, over-indulgent formulas that authors use in this space. Honestly, outside of The Girl With The Dragon tattoo, I don't think there is a single book that goes near this genre which I have enjoyed in, well, ever.

But boy, would avoiding Defending Jacob have been a terrible mistake! This book is, quite frankly, brilliant! As is common, I made the mistake of starting it when I had other big commitments on my plate, when I told myself that reading was supposed to stop at 11:00 pm, I'd look over at the clock to see it had drifted to 2:00 am. The book simply stole me away from real life. I don't know if it would be possible to be anything but totally engrossed in this story. William Landay is a wizard with story telling. He seems to never waste a word because every one he used in this book took you deeper and deeper into it.

By the end of Defending Jacob, I felt like it was me who was the story-teller, not Andy Barber. I felt emotionally invested in all of the characters. I literally experienced moments when I'd look down at my body and notice that I was about to fall out of my seat because my rear was right on the edge.

All I can say is that William Landay has saved the crime fiction genre for me! This was a brilliant story told my a master of fiction! I can't recommend this one enough!
