The Devil All the Time by Donald Ray Pollock
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Holy moly this was a dark book. I had read that in reviews before picking it up but I definitely wasn't prepared for what I read. As I got deeper and deeper into the story I actually disgusted myself that I somehow was able to sympathize with some of the wretched people in this story. This was my first experience reading something by Donald Ray Pollock but the tone and flavor of the book felt very much like something by Cormac McCarthy... but much, much darker.
This was one of those books that I'm not sure I know who I could recommend it to partly because they may question my sanity in such a high rating of such a brutal book but also because I think that everyone I know is much too innocent for a tale of this kind. However I have to admit that it was a fantastically entertaining story and kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end!
